Career Profile

Mr Manson qualified from Manchester in 1978. He trained in Manchester and Harvard Medical School, USA and gained a fellowship from The Royal College of Surgeons in 1982. This was followed by a higher degree by thesis in 1989, before being appointed consultant in 1993.

Specialist Interests

Mr Manson has considerable expertise in all areas of general surgery but has become a specialist in upper gastrointestinal surgery, particularly surgery of the oesophagus, stomach and gallbladder. He has extensive experience of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and minimally invasive anti-reflux surgery, also performing oesophageal and gastric resections for malignancy. Audited and presented outcomes in all these areas compare favourably with results produced anywhere in the world. 

Mr Manson also has extensive experience in the preparation of reports in cases of alleged clinical negligence, both for the defendant and claimant. 

He is a regular reviewer for several journals and a member of the editorial board of the British Journal of Surgery. He is also the regional co-ordinator for higher surgical training, an intercollegiate examiner in general surgery, member of council of the Association of Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgeons, an advisor for NICE and NCEPOD, a Royal College assessor on consultant interview committees and a member of the Institute of Expert Witnesses.
