Endoscopy – Flexible sigmoidoscopy

A sigmoidoscopy is an examination of the rectum and lower bowel.

A small scope (viewing device) is inserted into the anus (back passage). The bowel is then inflated with air in order to carry out the examination.

The procedure is not usually painful but a little discomfort can be experienced.

A biopsy (small piece of tissue) is sometimes taken for laboratory examination.
